Richmond Gas Works Receives $10 Million Grant

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) announced $196 million in grants for 37 projects across 19 states, and Richmond received one of them.

The Natural Gas Distribution Infrastructure Safety and Modernization grant program is intended to improve public safety, protect public health and reduce methane emissions from aging natural gas pipelines.

PHMSA Deputy Administrator Tristan Brown came to the 3000 block of Lawson Street in Swansboro West in the 5th Council District on April 17 to present a $10 million check to Mayor Levar Stoney, in addition to a $7.1 million check to Mayor Lloyd Snook of Charlottesville. Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan also spoke at the event along with Lauren Hildebrand, director of Charlottesville DPU and Erin Kurilla, vice president of Operations and Safety at the American Public Gas Association.
